This Hebrew root (BDB 778) means “neck” or “necklace.” It came to denote a tall people group in southern Canaan (cf. Josh. 11:21-22), but mostly connected to the city of Hebron. This very tall (i.e., “long neckers”) group/clan are the descendants of Arba (cf. Josh. 14:15; 15:13; 21:11).

The Hebrew spies that Joshua sent into Canaan/Palestine to check out the Promised Land before the invasion saw these large people and were terrified (cf Num. 13:28,33).
